When people hear the word Myasthenia Gravis (MG)
the first question they ask me is "What is it?"  I asked the same question
when my neurologist told me that I had MG. At first I felt depressed,
because this disease was changing my life.  Now the MG stands for
Magnificant Greatness, because my life has been filled with great
blessings that I would have never known before the MG!

Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune-
neuromuscular disorder, which is characterized by fluctuating weakness
of the voluntary muscle group.  Muscles that control movement of the
arms, legs, head, neck, talking, chewing, swallowing, coughing, facial
expressions and breathing may become affected.  Ocular Myasthenia
Gravis occurs when the muscles that control the eyes and eyelids are
primarily affected.

Individuals with MG have physical symptoms that tend to fluctuate
though out the day.  The symptoms from one MG patient to another also
tend to vary.  It is common for the fatigue to worsen as the day
progresses.  Rest often brings some relief.  MG can be a very humbling
disorder.  Patients are often dependent on others for assistance.  They
may start their day nearly normal and be struggling with many challenges
by the end.  Symptoms may fluctuate from day to day, and hour to
hour.  Activities and environmental changes can greatly affect it.
Breathing problems can become a serious, potentially life-threatening
complication of MG.

Because MG affects each person so differently, it is sometimes referred
to as a "Snowflake" disease, no two are the same.  There is no cure for
MG, but there are effective treatments that allow many, but not all
people with MG, to lead full lives.  Common treatments include
medications, thymectomy and plasmapheresis.

SNOWFLAKES
by Gail Renderman

(This poem is dedicated to patients around
the world with Myasthenia Gravis (MG).
MG is a neuromuscular disorder that affects
each person so differently they call it a
"Snowflake" disease.  I live in Wisconsin
and know how beautiful the snowflakes
can be, even during tough storms.)

MGers are like the Snowflakes,
All unique - you will agree,
MG is something that affects us,
Each so differently!

The Snowflakes, no two alike,
Are special in many ways,
They're delicate, but yet so strong,
And they dance on the coldest days.

And like the Snowflakes that land together,
In the sun they seem to shine,
MGers give hope to each other,
To get through the toughest times.

May this Snowflake remind you,
When it comes to call,
That our thoughts and prayers are sent,
To give you courage through it all,

Blessings for better days!
